The ranking (with a few fun facts)
So, here are the TOP 10 most popular cocktails in the world, with the very Italian Negroni finally making it to number one!
# 1 Negroni
Most experts agree that this cocktail first made its appearance in Florence in 1919, at Caffè Casoni, the precursor of today's cocktail bars, which was frequented by the man who invented it: Count Camillo Negroni.
# 2 Old Fashioned
This cocktail has dropped to second place, after 7 years of ranking number one. It was invented in Tennessee and was originally called the "Old Fashioned Whiskey Cocktail". However, during the Prohibition era in the United States, they added lemon zest, a little bit of soda and 2 red cherries to hide the taste of the alcohol, and the name of the recipe became simply "Old Fashioned".
# 3 Dry Martini
The Martini appeared in several cocktail bars at the same time, in around 1905, when bartenders started experimenting with gin and dry vermouth. It was also James Bond’s favourite cocktail.
# 4 Margarita
A tang of lime, sweet orange liqueur and the distinctive strength of tequila; we can safely say that this combination satisfies all tastes.
# 5 Daiquiri
The name derives from the Cuban mining town in which it was invented. You have to know exactly the right mix of light rum and dark sugar syrup, ingredients that accentuate each other's best qualities and go perfectly with fresh lime juice.
# 6 Aperol Spritz
Today's classic Italian aperitif was invented in 1919. An easy-to-make drink with an eye-catching vibrant orange colour, which has been a huge success in the United States since 2010, thanks to its bittersweet flavour, pungent aromas and easygoing alcohol content.
# 7 Espresso Martini
This cocktail made its debut at Fred's Club in London in the 1980s, immediately conquering the club's customers and well-known celebrities like the model Kate Moss. It has a balanced flavour, with the right ratios of coffee, sugar and vodka. The final ingredient is a coffee liqueur, usually Kahlúa.
# 8 Manhattan
Invented in the Manhattan Club in New York around 1880, it has long been one of the most popular cocktails in the world. The combination of American whiskey, Italian vermouth and an invigorating drop of Angostura Bitters, makes the Manhattan a tasty and timeless drink.
# 9 Mojito
A world-famous cocktail named after Sir Francis Drake, an English explorer who visited Cuba and Havana in 1586. In the first half of the 20th century, it officially appeared in a manual with the name Mojito. The main ingredients are originally from Cuba: rum, lime, mint and sugar. The mint adds that extra refreshing touch, much appreciated by Ernest Hemingway, who regularly drank mojitos at La Bodeguita del Medio, a bar in Havana.
# 10 Whiskey Sour
Tradition has it that it was made with whiskey, lemon juice, sugar and egg white, the latter creating a richer texture. Today the egg white is optional in many cocktail bars, but experts say you should definitely add if you want to experience the original essence of the cocktail.
